Where to find the best routes

Exploring the Area

The towns and villages in this region are surrounded by a vast network of gravel roads, dirt tracks, trails, ancient Roman ways, and pilgrimage routes. While there are also plenty of paved roads, I personally prefer to avoid the asphalt whenever possible. Along many of these paths, you will find signposts indicating local destinations and the distances required to reach them.

Finding Your Way

What I personally enjoy most is simply picking a rough direction on a map and setting off on the bike. A huge advantage of an e-MTB is that if you take a wrong turn, it takes very little effort to double back and try the next path.

However, if you prefer more structured navigation, I highly recommend using apps like Komoot or Trailforks, both of which feature numerous pre-planned MTB routes.

Mounting Your Phone

Every bike is equipped with a Quad Lock mounting system. If you already have a Quad Lock phone case, you can click it right onto the bike. If not, we have universal adapters available for rent so you can mount your own phone (please note: this is at your own risk!).

More Information

Further down, you will find more detailed information about routes in the various local municipalities. Below each section, there is a button that leads to a dedicated page with additional info and GPX tracks that you can download to your own device or a rented navigation system. That said, for the best experience, I still recommend using the Komoot or Trailforks apps.

MTB Routes

MTB Routes Cortona

The area around Cortona is a dream location for mountain bikers and e-MTB riders. Historic mule tracks, white gravel roads, forest singletracks and panoramic ridge routes crisscross the hills that rise directly behind the town.

Routes start almost at your doorstep and quickly lead into quiet countryside, chestnut forests and olive groves. Climbs are often steady rather than extreme, making them perfect for longer rides with an e-MTB, while descents range from smooth and flowing to more technical sections for experienced riders.

Typical rides here combine:

  • Forest and hillside singletracks
  • Ancient stone roads once used by farmers and pilgrims
  • Wide gravel roads with spectacular valley views
  • Continuous elevation changes without overwhelming steepness

This area is ideal for riders who want variety, scenery and authentic Tuscan landscapes — whether you prefer relaxed exploration or more challenging trail riding.

MTB Routes Castiglion Fiorentino

Around Castiglion Fiorentino the landscape opens up. Rolling hills alternate with wide valleys, creating a very different riding experience compared to Cortona’s steeper slopes.

Here you’ll find:

  • Fast gravel roads through the Val di Chiana
  • Gentle climbs ideal for longer endurance rides
  • Quiet country lanes connecting small villages
  • A mix of open farmland and wooded hills

These routes are perfect for riders who enjoy covering distance, maintaining a steady rhythm and soaking up the vast Tuscan views. With an e-MTB you can easily combine multiple hills into one longer ride, without worrying about saving energy for the return.

It’s an excellent area for scenic day tours and relaxed exploration, with plenty of options to stop for coffee or lunch in historic villages along the way.

Routes Tuscany

Tuscany is a world-class destination for mountain biking, offering everything from rugged alpine peaks to flowy coastal trails. Because the landscape is so diverse, different areas cater to very specific styles of riding.

MTB routes Trasimeno

Lake Trasimeno, located just across the border from Tuscany in Umbria, offers a fantastic variety of terrain for cyclists. Whether you are looking for a relaxed lakeside cruise or a challenging climb into the hills, there is a route for every level.
